The Encrypted PIN Pad (EPP)
Unlike standard computer keyboards or terminal touch surfaces, a cash machine layout functions as a completely self-contained cryptographic processing device called an Encrypted PIN Pad (EPP). The moment a user selects their input sequence, the data is immediately ciphered directly within the hardware module itself before ever reaching the machine's central processing computer.
Physical Engineering Specifications
Industrial keypads deployed by major global manufacturers (such as NCR and Diebold Nixdorf) must comply with stringent physical criteria to satisfy security certifications like PCI-PTS:
- Tamper-Responsive CircuitryAn internal array of micro-wires wrapped around the cryptographic chips triggers an immediate structural zeroisation (erasure) of all security keys if the physical shell is drilled into, melted, or forced open.
- Electromagnetic ShieldingThe outer metal chassis is designed to isolate signal radiation, preventing unauthorized third-party scanning devices from sniffing electrical frequencies during a keypress.
- Vandal and Weather ArmorConstructed out of high-grade stainless steel or custom impact alloys, individual keys are completely sealed against moisture, liquid ingress, and repetitive impact pressures up to industrial ratings.
- Recessed Matrix AlignmentKeypads are deliberately installed within a sunken indentation or underneath a physical privacy shield shroud. This geometry restricts the horizontal viewing angles, blocking visual recording or direct line-of-sight exposure.
Cryptographic Handshakes
When a selection is compiled, the EPP wraps the sequence using specialized block-cipher mechanisms (such as Triple DES or AES algorithms). It converts the input into an isolated data string called a PIN Block. This layout guarantees that if the main software operating system of the terminal gets compromised, the underlying data remains fully encrypted inside the hardware component.
